The aim is to create an easy, fun, minimal portfolio tool for mixed media which improves user experience and visitor retention by employing a fluid, single page, web app style interface.

Includes popular open-source Javascript libraries jQuery UI, BBQ & SoundManager2. YouTube, Vimeo, and SoundCloud web-players are automatically embedded, with chromeless API support forthcoming for integration with the 'local' audio mixer.

Bizarre 1-bit blog styled after the Macintosh Classic. A standard for my school board through the primary grades, this was the computer I was ‘learned’ on.

Tasked with creating a quirky monochrome theme for the blog, and inspired by the heroic Amiga Workbench javascript emulation at chiptune.com, a Macintosh System 7 theme began to take shape in my mind. I first created the share icons, using each social site’s favicon.ico as a reference. Next came converting the original System 7 fonts to work with the javascript font rendering engine Cufon. Since the source fonts are bitmap, not vector, I used an online tool called Pxfon to handle the conversion. Images of the character sets were screen-captured from Mini vMac, a System 7 emulator running on Windows. Icon and title-bar images were based on screen captures as well. Finally, the popular jQuery library was used for window behaviours.

Big ups to the designer of the original Macintosh UI graphics, Susan Kare.

Custom Wordpress theme with social media integration and a minimal aesthetic. Coded from scratch for maximum search-engine-optimization, the site progressively enhances from Lynx to Internet Explorer through to the iPad:

Some really incredible prog rock from the twisted, yet caring mind of Jon Epworth (and the Improvements, The Dean Malenkos). This was the result of a Canada Council grant to write a concept album about the environment.

I set up some mics at Sleepytown Soundand got sounds while Jon played a variety of instruments. I then left the keys and went on Christmas holiday. When I came back two weeks later, this was the result.

We later mixed the album at Unichord and it was mastered by Ryan Mills. Recently a vinyl pressing has been made of the raw mixes, and I can't wait to hear it...

Jazz trio (upright bass, drumset, and upright piano) recorded live to accompany a short film by Daniel Warth. Several moods based around one melodic theme were recorded in a matter of hours at Angle's Up, and mixed shortly thereafter at Unichord.

Nominated for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize! Daniel Lee (Hooded Fang frontman) recorded and mixed this album at his home studio, so my mastering was the band's only production cost - one that paid off handily with several licensing deals and a glowing review in the Toronto Star. Buy it on Bandcamp.

I met Simeon Abbott while playing in Metal Kites. This piano duo release from Teri Parker and Simeon was a joy to work on due to the excellent acoustics and pianos at The Music Gallery, where it was recorded live to multitrack. Simeon, Teri, and I mixed this together over two days at Unichord. I enjoyed working with the stereo images of two keyboard instruments. One reviewer said, "Sonically, the album sounds very rich, clear, and natural." Mastered by Fedge. Hear more and buy it on Bandcamp.

Whimsical, dramatic, tragic lyrics set to novel melodies and backed by a solid groove - power pop! I put a lot of work into this album, recording it largely myself in the final days of Sleepytown, but never made any copies of it. Available for free or PWYC download on Bandcamp, hope you dig.

Singer / songwriter Reg Vermue's 2009 release of B-sides, covers, and remixes on Arts & Crafts. This was one of the first albums I mastered at Unichord - before the console had even been finished!

German writer-director Tomasz Thompson came across the music of the Born Ruffians while on internet radio. Soon, he had commissioned an original score by frontman Luke Lalonde and travelled to Toronto to oversee the production. This was my first recording project at Angle's Up, a cozy garage studio near my house. Luke spent a few days multitracking original parts - I played drums on one track - and soon we had a number of themes to work with. We also re-edited stems from Red, Yellow, and Blue to create instrumental mixes. At the end of the week, Tomasz returned to Germany with a near-finished film score.

I first met Maylee when she was performing with Henri Faberge & the Adorables in 2006. Her solo project, which we produced together at Sleepytown in late 2008-2009, has a distinctly gentler feel but is no less quirky or fun. Bed tracks were recorded live-off-the-floor, with harp, vocals, and vibraphone dubbed soon after. Maylee spent several weeks doing more overdubs at home, and we reconvened to mix. Finally the album was mastered by Ryan Mills and released in 2010 by Do Right Music. Since then she's done several music videos promoting the album, lent her voice to Telus ads, and toured Europe with Janelle Monae. Buy it on Bandcamp.

Flash website I made for the launch of Sleepytown Sound. The background quilt was found in my home, the notebook and handwriting are my own, and the ActionScript mp3 player interface from a Tascam cassette 8-track in the studio.

We had this 'no ponytail' campaign going at the time, comprised of a print ad in Exclaim (also handwritten), this website, and the cardboard 'ponytail guy' ads which featured real hair - we put them up in jamspace washrooms.

While mixing and mastering at Unichord, I became accustomed with using purpose-designed physical interfaces for the task - namely, the mastering desk and analog processor faceplates. However, the varied and largely digital nature of my clients' work lends itself much better to a solely digital post-processing environment. I started reading on NUI and other DIY multitouch sites, and soon built a functional 19" LCD with optical infra-red multitouch.

ROYGMIX is a PureData patch which takes input from the multitouch screen and sends visuals back, while sending and receiving MIDI signals with the audio mixer. It allows easy control of 2 independent parameters by each finger in real-time, and improves the audio-visual correlation compared to a traditional 'row of faders' audio mixer by employing a two dimensional space.

Slowed and pruned for maximum enjoyment, all year round.

AJAX based mini-site for my friend Mariel's Fall 2011 Lookbook. Simple, intuitive mouse & keyboard navigation, jQuery BBQ for deep-linking support, and an extremely minimal design were employed to get the site online and fully functional in a matter of hours.

This music lessons website for a friend seemed the perfect opportunity to try out the Stacey database-free CMS. Print friendly design.

CSS/HTML recreation of Metatecture logo. (No images or SVGs)

Browser visualization concept for a friend's robot project. An XML file contains map data which is assigned to the CSS background color of each square by javascript.

CSS parallax 3D simulation in javascript, using a simple SVG repeating background image for each layer. Single point perspective follows your mouse cursor. Performance is admittedly kind of poor - I'm sure this is better suited for the <canvas> element... more to come!

Recorded as live as possible, as loud as possible, and as late at night as possible, the Action Makes sessions really pushed the party limits of Sleepytown Sound. Danny (BCN) had recorded this album himself, but wasn't totally happy with the result. We spent a half day adding hi-fi rhythm guitars to some of the songs, and in tradition with the other BCN albums I've worked on, I quickly laid down the missing bass line for "That Evil Beat". A combination mix & master soon followed and we had it done in time for the show. Hear more and download on Bandcamp.

Drummer / producer Leon Taheny got some really wicked punchy sounds out of his garage studio, Angle's Up, on this recording of his longtime band Germans. I made a couple mix tweaks and mastered this while still setting up the Unichord studio, straight off of Leon's PC running Nuendo. If you like snare drum, you'll love Germans.

My first 'hand coding' project, using just a plain text editor for the HTML, CSS, and jQuery code. I went a bit nutty with the animations and transitions, but hey, life is short. (?) HTML5 video and custom audio player with SoundManager2. Full-screen images by my friend Joel Di Giacomo.

I met these guys when I recorded their previous EP at Sleepytown Sound. This track was produced by Matt DeMatteo (Big Wreck, Hawksley Workman); I did a quick master for the video release.

Basic typographical discography / bio website with lots of mp3 links, and lots of "title" (mouseover) text. I created the color-changing* favicon along with this site design, which I still use today.

Recorded almost entirely live including lead vocals at Sleepytown Sound. Clara and her fans loved the performances that this method brought out, although it was a bit tricky engineering-wise! An Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail reverb pedal was used for the live mix, and was then augmented with stereo reverb in the final mix. Clara lives in Montreal right now, but you can often catch her doing shows in Toronto and New York. Hear more and buy on Bandcamp. Three songs have also been released on vinyl by Vox Humana in the UK.

More live-off-the-floor rockin' from the Marvelous Darlings. We recorded these bed tracks live to cassette 8-track, dumped to digital, then overdubbed vocals, piano, and guitar solos. Released on 7" vinyl on Taken By Surprise. Check out the band's MySpace for more.

I first met Paul Norrish (Book) at a Korean karaoke room, midway through singing 'Always a Woman' by Billy Joel. Paul didn't personally know the birthday girl either.

We recorded most of this over two days at a studio in the Junction, acoustic guitar and vocals live off the floor, and then did some violin, banjo and vocal overdubs in my living room. I was midway through building the Unichord studio at that point, having just closed Sleepytown in the spring, so this project marks the transition.

The second studio website, redone primarily in HTML rather than Flash for SEO. My partner and I designed it together at the studio, and aimed to capture the 'maturing, but still fun' vibe of the time. I took the panorama photo and soon realized that the actual walls of each room would make great background for the body text, and extend the feel of the studio into the site. I reused the flash 'cassette' mp3 player from the previous website, but added annotations. The 'recording cat' image was composed of a cat poster on the studio wall, with our actual vocal microphone positioned in front. :)

More than a few times my clients mentioned how they enjoyed seeing the image from the 'Map' page in Warden station en-route to the studio - I think for regular clients and for me especially, this site felt like 'home'. Other features include an online rate calculator with example budgets, a photo collage of our microphone collection, detailed equipment and discography pages.

Two page flash mini-site for mikekuehn.ca (2007). I had some fun with the animated background, and built a simple mp3 player with annotations while playing.

My first attempt at a 'music website'. I was really into this web forum 'TapeOp' at the time, and used this site to document my music productions and share them with the home recording community. (My forum name was 'dynomike', as seen in the top left home button'.) Created in Dreamweaver & Photoshop - the site made use of advanced 'Web 1.0' features like, you know, hard links to mp3's and m3u playlists. ;)

I photographed my bespeco volume pedal and cord to reinforce the 'diy musician / engineer' idea.

Recorded between 2000 and 2003 using a SoundBlaster card and the included computer mic. Some of these are pretty humourous... Enjoy.

Oh, Lord... Rokkus was a basement teenage rock n' roll band with a (self-)righteous twist. My brother, myself, and our friend from Christian camp managed to cook up 4.5 hot summer singles before the inevitable post-secondary burnout.

Lyrical themes include sin's true name ('Call It What You Like'), sex prevention ('Night Of Desire'), when to make a long term commitment ('Baby It's Gotta Be Now') and "frontin" ('Frontin').
